Our tour begins with a visit to the Royal Palace gate, the Jewish quarter, and the first Mellah in Morocco, which was constructed in the 14th century. We'll make sure you see all the cultural and historical sites, including the renowned Al Qaraouine University. The Tanneries and Moulay Idriss Mausoleum are the oldest in the world. Following lunch, you will visit a tile cooperative and then be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of Fes' Medina. Staying the night at the same riad.

After breakfast, depart Fes for Merzouga, passing through Midelt and the Ziz Valley. Today you will travel through Ifrane, a lovely mountain village known as Morocco's Switzerland. You'll also visit a cedar forest in the Atlas Mountains' middle reaches. During this journey, you'll see glimpses of the Middle Atlas and Higher Atlas mountains, as well as a stop in Azrou, a Berber village in the heart of Morocco's famous cedar forest, the largest in the country, where you'll be able to see Barbary apes. Following lunch in Midelt, travel through the fascinating Tiz Ntalghamt pass and the spectacular Ziz Gorge, taking in views of the High Atlas plateau and seeing how the scenery changes to reveal hints of the desert as you approach the province of Errachidia city in the south-east. After that, you'll travel to Erfoud and Rissani via the spectacular Ziz Valley, stopping for panoramic views along the way. When you arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon, you'll be greeted with a glass of mint tea and shown to your riad. (HB.)

DAY 4: MERZOUGA - SAHARA DESERT - CAMEL TREK:

After breakfast in your riad, you can explore the surrounding region before beginning your camel ride; you will visit the Gnawa people - originating from Mali, Senegal, and Sudan - in their village Khamlia, where you will learn about their music and way of life. You will also have the option of seeing Rissani, the birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty, Morocco's current governing royal family. Rissani is surrounded by 360 ksar (fortified villages with several towers) and has a large souk (open market) that takes place three times a week. This was once known as Sijilmassa, and it was where the salt caravans from Mali's Tombouctou met. You'll stroll around the souk, which sells spices, vegetables, and clothing. Return to Merzouga village by car. In the afternoon, you'll ride your camel with an expert camel-man to see what's buried deep among Morocco's tallest sand dunes. Dinner will be served in front of the tent where you'll be sleeping.
